Machine Learning for Science & Engineering

Workshop | UW Seattle Campus | June 27-28, 2023

Physics-informed Machine Learning (ML) continues to emerge as a leading paradigm that integrates artificial intelligence with engineering dynamic systems. This approach provides new capabilities in real-time sensing, learning, decision-making, and predictions that are ethical, efficient, reliable, safe, and imbued with uncertainty quantification. The foundations of physics-informed ML are rooted in four key disciplines: (i) control theory, (ii) probability and statistics, (iii) optimization, and (iv) dynamical systems (modeling). The integration of all four disciplines is critical for the development of ML algorithms that can be leveraged by engineered systems. Establishing rigorous mathematical connections between these disciplines is a driving inspiration for our efforts in reframing the foundations of ML for the engineering sciences.

Target Audience: This workshop brings together members of the AI Institute in Dynamic Systems with the goal of the continued development of teams whose focus is to develop the core mathematical architectures as well as domain applications. (Non-institute members may register, but some topics may be relevant only to those at the institute.)

It may be easier to arrive to campus via light rail or bus, however, if you need to park on campus, please see information regarding visitor parking, in particular the self-serve parking option.

  • Restrooms are available on every floor.
  • We will offer complimentary coffee and tea. The nearest coffee shop is the Microsoft Cafe, which is just upstairs from the workshop. Food & drink is not allowed inside the classroom. Bottled water is fine.
  • We recommend bringing your own reusable water bottle to fill at nearby water fountains.
Dining
A number of dining halls and cafes on campus are open to the public. (No cash accepted.) Additionally, there are many options along University Way ("The Ave"), which offer a variety of price points. University Village also has several restaurant options.

    • Visitors who are affiliated with a participating Eduroam campus or institution can access the UW Wi-Fi network through that service.
    • Proper Use - Using UW Wireless to send spam, illegally trade files, or spread viruses will result in restriction of UW network privileges. Follow the University of Washington's Ethics in Computer and Network Use, which can be found online here.
  • A reminder that local travel guidance and accommodation requests may be found below.

Travel Guidance

Airport
Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA), also referred to as Sea–Tac, is the primary airport serving the Seattle metropolitan area.

Hotels
There are several hotels in the University District at a variety of price points that are within walking distance of campus. Visitors are encouraged to explore accommodation options and determine the best fit for their needs and budget. (Lodging through Airbnb/VRBO are also options.) Below are nearby options:
Transportation App
Transit GO Ticket is an app that allows riders to purchase light rail and bus fare using their mobile device, as well as use a trip planning feature. The Transit Go Ticket works on King County Metro Buses, Sound Transit Express Bus, Light Rail and Sounder, King County Water Taxi, Seattle Streetcar and Kitsap Transit routed buses and fast ferry.

Light Rail
Link Light Rail runs from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport through downtown Seattle and connects many destinations, including the UW Seattle campus.

Bus
For information on how to take a bus to the UW Seattle campus or surrounding areas, visit the Metro Trip Planner which helps you determine where and when to catch buses by entering your beginning and end locations as well as times. Google, Apple Maps, or the above mentioned Transit Go Ticket app are also helpful tools.

Shuttle
Shuttle Express is a private van or town car service leaving from the garage area of the Main Terminal of the airport. Follow the signs for Ground Transportation. They will take you wherever you wish to go, and the cost depends on where you go. This service is open 24 hours daily and the waiting time is about 15-30 minutes.

Taxi/Lyft/Uber
These are additional options for getting to/from your destinations while visiting.

Funding

Travel funding is limited to (non-UW) faculty, students, and postdocs that are members of the AI Institute in Dynamic Systems- members, you do not need to apply for funding. (A suggested limit is $1,500, but this is not a hard limit as we recognize some members may be traveling longer distances.) Please follow the guidance below and submit reimbursement at the end of your trip. Trip costs such as hotel, flight, and ground transportation are generally reimbursable. However, please consider the following before booking travel:
  • Per diem is a daily limit that is allowed to be spent on lodging and meals based on location. (See per diem rates.)
  • Meals may be reimbursed based on actual costs, up to per diem rates per meal period. i.e., rather than paying a flat per diem, we ask for receipts per meal, and we will reimburse that amount, up to the limit.
  • The Fly America Act is a federal policy that mandates the use of U.S. certificated air carriers for federally funded international travel. Additionally, upgraded tickets/seats/class are not reimbursable.
  • We cannot reimburse costs associated with personal travel and/or other business-related trips that may be adjacent to this trip. If you have a unique travel situation, please contact us in advance for guidance.
  • Please save all receipts and the final hotel folio for the reimbursement process.
  • Reimbursement is processed after the trip and may take a few weeks. This form may be used to submit your request.
